A Parkland family wanted an outdoor kitchen that could stand up to South Florida summers — and still look intentional enough to be the centerpiece of their backyard. The answer started as a rough iPad sketch on Sebastián's lap, and ended as a hand-built wood-slat grill pavilion that ties into the home's Mediterranean architecture.

The Challenge

The yard had beautiful bones — pavers, pergola, lush landscaping — but no real outdoor kitchen. A standard prefab grill island would have clashed with the home's tiled roof and the existing wood slat privacy screens above the patio.

Our Approach

We started with a dimensioned sketch Sebastián drew on-site (you can see it below). The design echoes the horizontal wood slats already in the pergola, wraps a polished concrete countertop around a pro-grade grill, and sits on a cast-in-place concrete pad bordered by river rock — so water drains cleanly through every rainy season.

The Result

A covered outdoor kitchen that looks like it was always part of the house. The wood matches the existing slat screens, the counter is deep enough for two people to cook side-by-side, and the whole build is humidity-sealed to survive August storms and salt air.

Designer's note

I sketched this one standing in their backyard on a Saturday. Sometimes the best design decisions happen before the tape measure comes out — you just have to see the space.
